Every year we call for nominations for the best black-owned small businesses and entrepreneurs across industries and the country. This year the Black Enterprise community nominated movers and shakers across the board for family business, teenpreneur, techpreneur, and franchise owner of the year. And for some business owners, they make it a goal of theirs to be recognized by Black Enterprise as an award winner. Over the years, thousands of black business owners have been nominated and win or lose, they have gone on to make huge strides in their communities.

The chamber’s top business honor, the Pinnacle Award, honors local businesses run by African American entrepreneurs that have achieved the height of success and positively impacted their communities.

This year’s event came as larger black-owned companies and entities that advocate, do business with, and support small black-owned businesses in Houston and surrounding areas are helping those entrepreneurs rebound from the massive storm.

That ranks Houston No. 11 among metro areas with the most companies on the 2017 list. New York City tops the list with 355, but Dallas-Fort Worth is the only Texas metro that ranks higher than Houston, taking the No. 6 spot with 185 companiesAustin ranks No. 15 with 91 companies. Overall, 425 companies are from Texas, ranking the state No. 2 behind California, with 670 companies.
